Dry Skin: Causes and Treatments

Dry skin produces less sebum (oil) than other skin types, and therefore isn’t able to retain moisture as well. This can result in roughness, itchiness, redness, or other signs of irritation if not properly taken care of.

Skin type is largely influenced by genetics, so if your parents have dry skin, there’s a good chance you have dry skin, too. Our skin produces less oil as we age, so some people may develop drier skin later in life.

External factors can also exacerbate dry skin. Cold and dry weather, extra hot showers or baths, certain medications, smoking, or using indoor heating can all cause the skin to look and feel dry. Eliminating these factors (or putting preventative measures in place, like using a humidifier) can help make the skin feel more comfortable.

Using the wrong products for your skin can also play a major role in your dry skin feeling particularly rough, irritated, and/or itchy. With that in mind, the best thing you can do to keep your dry skin as hydrated and comfortable as possible is use the right products.

Best Products for Dry Skin

When it comes to dry skin, the key is finding skincare products that boost hydration and don’t contribute to drying out the skin even more. Below, we’ll talk about what you need to look for in each type of skincare product.

Face Washes

People with dry skin should look for face washes specifically formulated for their skin type. The best face washes for dry skin will typically contain hydrating ingredients, and will gently cleanse without stripping the skin. Balms and cream cleansers are particularly great for dry skin.

Moisturizers

Finding the right moisturizer is key for dry skin. Cream moisturizers are particularly beneficial for dry skin, as they have a thicker consistency and can give this skin type the deep hydration that it needs. An effective dry skin moisturizer may contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, squalane, plant oils, and ceramides.

Serums

Serums are great for addressing a variety of skin concerns, such as signs of aging, redness, irritation, or uneven skin tone. Those with dry skin can particularly benefit from a hydrating serum containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.

Exfoliants

Exfoliants are great for dry skin, as they help remove dead skin cells on the surface of the skin to promote a smoother complexion. Exfoliants containing alpha-hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid, mandelic acid, and lactic acid) are particularly well-suited for dry skin.

Sunscreens

There are plenty of great sunscreens on the market that, in addition to sunscreen filters, contain hydrating and soothing ingredients. You can find some excellent recommendations here on Skincare Hero. If you have dry and sensitive skin, you’ll benefit from using a mineral sunscreen, as it is less likely to cause irritation than chemical sunscreens.
