Proven Skincare is a brand that takes a revolutionary, holistic approach to personalized skincare. Your individual skin goals are analyzed alongside lifestyle and environmental factors to develop a simplified, effective routine.

Their skincare quiz aims to create a thorough and current assessment of your skin needs to create product formulations for you as an individual.

Using a clinical approach, skin concerns such as aging, hyperpigmentation, acne and sensitivity can be targeted. Where this skincare line differs from others on the market-even other personalized brands- is the data driven understanding of environmental and lifestyle factors, including local weather, travel habits and blue light exposure.

The Proven Skincare Story

Founder and CEO Ming Zhao partnered with co-founder Dr. Amy Yuan to create Proven Skincare after feeling overwhelmed by the frustrating process of finding effective skincare. Tired of the false promises and inconsistent results of other brands, the pair aimed to create a skincare line that, using Amy's scientific expertise, took a holistic approach to skincare backed by data.

The brand launched in 2018, and has since earned thousands of positive reviews of both their products and service from happy customers across the US.

Proven's science-based approach became the basis of The Skin Genome ProjectTM, the world's largest skincare database. It is this ever-growing database that informs the personalized formulations of Proven Skincare products, taking into consideration factors such as location, ingredient interaction, and testimonials.

After taking the quiz, Proven Skincare presents a three-step-only system of cleanser, moisturizer and a night cream. Within these three products, the active ingredients that are algorithmically chosen for you are incorporated to simply and effectively treat your specific skin concerns. While it is possible to purchase each product seperately, the formulations are designed to work together.

The Skin Genome Project

As the winner of MIT’s 2018 Artificial Intelligence Award, The Skin Genome ProjectTM is the world's most comprehensive skin database. Harnessing the power of technology, the database is able to draw logical conclusions from massive amounts of information that is constantly being updated.

This huge database is used to inform your personalized skincare formulas, analyzing factors such as ingredient effectiveness, weather patterns in your area, and ever-changing scientific research into skin.

According to Proven Skincare, The Skin Genome ProjectTM can currently analyze:

  • The effectiveness of over 20,238 skincare ingredients.
  • Information about over 100,000 individual products (luxury, prescription, generic, etc.).
  • Over 8 million testimonials from real people.
  • Over 4,000 scientific publications.
  • The water hardness, humidity level, and UV index where you live.

The purpose of ths database is to remove the guesswork from skincare product formulation to deliver you personalized products that are backed by science. As your skin or conditions change, so can your products without the frustrating trial-and-error that usually comes with developing a skincare routine.

The Quiz

If the prospect of a completely personalized skincare routine appeals to you, the first step is to take Proven Skincare's Skin Genome Quiz™. It is free, and takes only three minutes.

The first question asks which skin concerns you would like to address: sensitivity, redness, hyperpigmentation, acne, fine lines or wrinkles, dryness, loss of firmness or elasticity, or anything else. As you answer the questions, active ingredients are added to your personal skincare cocktail, such as vitamin C, zinc oxide or glycerin.

The following questions address your concerns in more depth. For me, who suffers from acne and sensitivity, the questions were very detailed about the nature of both. Questions about how my skin feels in the morning and how it appears in photos are all aimed to develop a thorough understanding of the way my skin functions.

Questions about age, skin tone, hormones, hydration, sleep, stress, diet and travel are asked. The quiz requests your postcode- with this it can determine environmental factors such as water hardness, upcoming weather patterns and pollution levels, all of which affect the functioning of our skin.

The exact formulation of your own personalized routine will be determined algorithmically using all these factors, and Proven recommends re-testing every 5-7 weeks to keep your formulas up to date.

Example Proven Skincare Routine

While everyone's routine will be different, I have included my own results as an example of how the quiz delivers it's findings.

For targeting my acne, the ingredients suggested include pre & probiotics, witch hazel extract, salicylic acid, sulfur, and granactive retinol.

For sensitivity, I am suggested bisabolol (German chamomile extract) and allantoin. I am also informed that my local water in Brooklyn is very hard and air quality can be low.

I am suggested a cleanser, a daily moisturizer & SPF40, and a night cream & serum. The active ingredients in each are labeled clearly, as are the specific skin concerns that are being targeted.

In fact, the skincare regimen also evolves with time. As skin and environmental factors shift, each set of skincare products will be formulated slightly differently. This ever-changing approach to skincare is quite revolutionary and a testament to the science behind this brand.

There is the option to purchase each product individually or the trio for $119- a discount on the $185 if each was bought seperately.

Does Proven Skincare Work?

According to the many positive reviews online, Proven Skincare does work. However, the very nature of the personalized formulas means you'll have to take the test and try it yourself to know for sure.

Remember: a good skin regimen can take time to work, especially when trying to rebalance the skin after potentially using too many products. If you are looking to completely re-set your skincare routine, chances are you have already tried a range of products and active ingredients. Your skin could be stressed, and downgrading to only three skincare steps may feel like a kind of routine detox. The reviews and the science, however, are promising!

Is Proven Skincare cruelty free?

Proven Skincare is completely cruelty free with no animal testing.

Can my personalized Proven Skincare formula be changed?

Your quiz answers can be changed at any time, and the brand in fact encourages re-testing every 5-7 weeks. If your answers change between ordering and shipping, it is suggested you contact Proven ASAP to try and get your skincare product formulations altered.

How much does Proven Skincare cost?

The Proven Skincare set is priced at $145 for all three products. If bought individually it can add up to be more expensive, but if subscribed to as a membership you can save 35%.

The subscription is flexible, and is can be billed at 4, 6 or 8 week intervals. It can be cancelled or amended at any time.

Where is Proven Skincare sold?

Due to the personalized formulations that require taking the brand's quiz, the products are only available directly from Proven Skincare.

The brand is currently only available in the US.

The Bottom Line

If you are frustrated by the process of finding the right skincare routine, Proven Skincare may be the brand for you. While fairly pricey, the simplistic regimen and science-backed formulations have earned them thousands of positive reviews.

Skincare that takes into account your skin concerns, lifestyle and environmental factors is a revolutionary concept- one that has proven itself effective and popular among customers.

With Proven Skincare, you can be sure that the products you purchase will continue to develop with you as your skin and daily life change.
