FAQs

Is fragrance-free skincare better?

Ultimately, fragrance-free skincare isn’t necessarily better – it is just better suited for some people. Those with skin that is easily irritated may find that their skin negatively reacts to products that contain fragrances. However, if your skin tolerates scented products (and if scents don’t cause any other unwanted side effects, like headaches), you don’t need to exclusively seek out fragrance-free products if you don’t want to.

How do you know if a product is fragrance-free?

Many companies will choose to advertise that their product is fragrance-free, and will clearly state so on the label. However, if a product you’re interested in doesn’t disclose whether it contains fragrances, check out the ingredients label. In addition to the word “fragrance”, look for terms like “perfume” or “parfum”. “Limonene” (which comes from citrus rind) is another common scented ingredient you might come across. You’ll also want to look out for any fragrant natural essential oils, which can be just as irritating to sensitive skin as synthetic fragrances. If you come across any terms you’re unfamiliar with, do a quick search online.

Is fragrance-free the same as unscented?

These terms seem similar, but they actually mean different things. A fragrance-free product doesn’t contain any added fragrances to mask a scent or just make the product smell nicer. An unscented product, on the other hand, may contain chemicals that essentially neutralize the scent of other ingredients in the product to make the smell unnoticeable.

The Bottom Line
